An edir is a centuries-old Ethiopian tradition of community-based mutual aid. Members pool resources so that when a family faces the loss of a loved one, the community rallies together — financially and emotionally.
The Austin Area Mutual Aid EDIR serves the Ethiopian diaspora in Central Texas. We are a registered non-profit organization in the State of Texas, governed by our approved bylaws and the Texas Business Organizations Code Chapter 22.
Our EDIR is governed by an elected Council of Members and an Executive Committee (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Accountant, Internal Auditor, and Public Relations Officer). The General Assembly meets every two years.
To reach leadership, call or text (512) 717-1534 or use the contact form. Registered members can also message through the member portal.
Open to Ethiopian diaspora families residing in Austin or the surrounding metro area (Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Hays, Caldwell, Blanco, Burnet, Bell, Medina, Bexar, and Comal counties). Must be 18 or older.
Husband, wife, dependent children, and parents living at the same residence may all be registered under one family membership. Children under 18 are registered free as dependents.
When a member passes away, each active member contributes $25 within 90 days to replenish the fund. Members with 3+ missed notices may be suspended.
Every January, members contribute an annual admin fee: $10 individual · $20 family up to 2 · $30 family up to 3+.
